What I Do

An Urban Renewal hopes not just to be an platform for certain discussions around community development and housing struggles. We –  those of us in the work of social change – know that community organizing is a marathon, and I hope to share what we explore and learn here in the goal of furthering existing and emergent social movements rethinking what their homes can be in a rapidly shifting political and cultural context. If you wish to bring some of this knowledge to your community or organizing space, please see the offerings I feel comfortable sharing below.

Offerings

Political Education

Political education is the backbone for any successful movement. This offering will be most useful if you are still in the midst of developing your group or space and are thinking about the group dynamics that would best support your longterm goals.

Strategic Planning

Planning isn’t fun for most people but it doesn’t need to be painful if you have a process to do it. Think of this as getting clearer about the rules and players of the game and the dimensions of the field. You have a group that has been up and running for a while, but need someone to point out pieces of the puzzle and where they should go.

Campaign Development

Campaigns need strategy, tactics and rhythm. You’re clear about your goals and have the GPS set. You have been traveling for a while and not sure if you’ve made a few wrong turns along the way. Or, maybe you are flying down the highway and are wondering where everyone else is. Did folks get lost or get dropped off somewhere they weren’t supposed to? This is a good place to assess your progress.

Communications Strategy

People constantly doing the work aren’t constantly thinking about how to describe it to others in ways that make them want to do it too. If you want to connect your base more deeply with your work, or are thinking about press as a tactic to move your targets in the right direction, this will help.

Organizer Onboarding

There is no school for organizing; instead organizers are often the products of the organizations they grow and develop in, with all of the pros and cons that come with that reality. If you are thinking about the culture that your organizers are working in or trying to support a newer staff member into their role, start here.

Accountability Support

Your team has done the training or the retreat together and are getting back to your routine, but are struggling to figure out how to apply the things you agreed to do. This can give you the runway to both create a plan and to see what types of implementation works and what doesn’t.
